Altered States
3D + Visual Effects Collaboration
Miro Board:
https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVNm6sh8Y=/
This is a collaboration with Abby Turner, Ari Flor Barco, Ziheng Li, Amber-Rose Liu, & myself.
it is a Visual Effects short film made using a mixture of Nuke, Autodesk Maya & Adobe Premier Pro.
My part in the film:
I filmed Abby Turner in various positions at the Tate Britain, referencing the storyboard she created based on our combined ideas. we put that raw footage into one film.

I modeled the statue based on a reference and character design based loosely on the reference.

Ari Flor Barco then re-meshed the statue to make it more coherent and I retextured it with substance painter, adding a displacement map so it would be more like the original reference
I animated this scene of the footage.
I rendered and lit the paintings that Ziheng Li had sculpted the frames of for the painting scene, and Amber-Rose Liu had digitally painted. I then used tracking and rotoscoping to render it fully.
Final Composition:
specialisms week 3
What is my brand?
brand analysis – identify two 3D artists and analyze their brand identities:
3d artist 1: dysphic on Instgram
She creates hyperrealistic art on blender with 3d models, mostly of humanoid faces. She uses detailed texture and light to achieve a fantastical ‘too real to be real’ effect. She has a distinctive visual style, and a clear artistic vision and narrative, as well as consistent marketing elements.
Specialisms
Week 1: Begin researching
Begin to approach these questions:
Where have you been? What do you have to show for it?
- Before university, I didn’t know any 3d animation. Now I know how to 3d model and that is a big jump for me. I am not the best at 3d animation, particularly character animation but I would like to be.
- I have 2 3d animation videos and environments
- I also have 2 2d animation videos to show my skills, but I would like to work on making many more for my portfolio
Where are you going? How do you intend to get there?
- I want to be more experienced at modeling and animating – specifically with adding detail to scenes which I really love doing. I want to be better at coming up with original ideas on a whim and finding my 3D style
How do you create? Who do you create for?
- I create for my childhood self, and for myself in order to make my dreams become reality
- I create to inspire others – and to be someone who can make a difference and make a meaningful impact on the world
- I create for the people around me – to show them what I have become and their influences and impacts on my work and my creations
Who are you as a creator?
- I am a person who enjoys making art, and who enjoys making a mark on this world. I love incorporating aspects of my culture and ethnicity into my works, whether it be hidden or obvious. As a Jewish woman, I have experienced a lot of discrimination, both direct and indirect. Despite this I am proud of my background, and of my people and my family. I would love to incorporate Jewish mythology, stories, and culture into my future works, and I hope to get a job in a place where they are not afraid to incorporate that.

Treatment Analysis
Activity: gather 2 examples of treatments/ pitch packs for film and animation – Identify 3 strengths and weaknesses for each pitch pack
strengths:
- episode examples
- shows the character’s personalities well and their future developments
- very compelling
weaknesses:
- unorganized – all over the place and a bit incoherent
- no storyline?
- lack of visuals
strengths:
- really great visuals and character descriptions
- environment is fleshed out and coherent
- lots of concept art
weaknesses:
- too many side characters
- too long
- can be confusing

Pros:
- Simple and minimalistic due to more of the reliance on shapes. This also means strong silhouettes.
- Easier to rig and animate.
- Popping colors are typically used so feels more captivating over textures (easier to be cohesive)
- The simplicity could also mean more room for experimenting such as with masking and textures.
Cons:
- Strong association with commercial work and marketing, hard to engage an audience.
- May be too simple, not as much room for personalization.
- Expressions could be more limited due to the more geometric forms.

Pro:
- more room for personalization and experimentation in terms of texture and overall style.
- Could rely more on using low poly models and allowing the textures to do more of the work.
- Graphic novel like, adhering to trends and art that we are familiar with prior to the concept of 3D.
Cons: - More time consuming as its more handcrafted.
- more difficult to be coherent with a team and gain that sense of uniformity.
- larger skill set required
